Europolis, Jean Bart’s 1933 novel of a multicultural society at the mouth of the Danube River, contains a bevy of vivid characters from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including the first Black heroine in Eastern European literature. Written in Romanian by Bart, an adventurous sea captain known to Romanian readers for his vivid travel sketches, Europolis has been translated ten times into eight languages (there are two translations each into French and Italian) and filmed at feature length twice. This pivotal novel has never appeared in English—until now!
In 2025 Central European University Press will publish Stephen’s English translation of Europolis.
