Translation Prizes
Stephen's English translation of Ondjaki's novel Transparent City was named a longlist finalist for the 2019 U.S. Best Translated Book Award and the 2020 International Dublin Literary Award.
Novel in Translation
Stephen's novel The Path of the Jaguar is forthcoming in Spanish translation from FyG Editores . It will be available in Central America, Mexico and at selected Spanish-language bookstores in the U.S.A.
New Novel
Stephen's new novel, The World of After, will be published by Cormorant Books in 2021. A long, plot-driven novel set in Montreal, Oxford, London, Poland, Moscow and former Yugoslavia, it portrays the 1990s as a decade of freedom, uncertainty and self-reinvention.
Stephen reviewed a posthumous work by Roberto Bolaño for the Times Literary Supplement.
An essay by Stephen on the career of Mario Vargas Llosa appeared in the Literary Review of Canada.
Stephen was interviewed about the history of the harassment scandals in the Concordia University creative writing program on CTV News.
Stephen's essay "An Ambiguous Voice" appeared in the collection Luminous Ink. Writers on Writing in Canada.
Stephen's long short story, "Blue River Hotel," will be published in the Fall 2018 issue of Ploughshares.
In 2018, Stephen published three new books: the short story collection Blue River and Red Earth , his English translation of Ondjaki's novel Transparent City, and his scholarly volume, co-edited with Candace Johnson, Human and Environmental Justice in Guatemala....
